Context
A medium-sized manufacturer ran its annual budget as a spreadsheet exercise held by a few people in finance. Producing the first complete version of the budget, the draft zero, absorbed around fifty man-days, and the commercial drivers behind the numbers were visible mainly to the people who built them.
Mission
Install budgeting, forecasting and a working financial model with the finance team, so that the organisation could run the next planning cycle itself and discuss the numbers through their drivers.
What changed
- Draft zero of the budget moved from around 50 man-days of effort to around 5.
- Planning accuracy reached 99% on the measure agreed at the outset.
- Finance and commercial leaders began to review one shared view of the financial drivers rather than separate versions.
